Cheap gear expensive experiences

Hot Take Tuesday: Cheap Gear, Expensive Experiences

There’s this idea floating around that you need the best of everything to have a great adventure — the priciest rooftop tent, the latest suspension, the top-shelf cooler.

But here’s the truth: you don’t.

Some of my favorite trips have been with budget gear and borrowed tools. The magic wasn’t in the price tag — it was in the miles, the company, and the moments that didn’t cost a dime.

Don’t get me wrong, quality matters. But it’s easy to fall into the trap of “gear before go.” The endless upgrades can start to replace the actual experience of getting out there.

A $30 camp chair around a $10,000 view beats the other way around every time.

Buy what you can afford, take care of it, and use it hard. Let the dirt, rain, and fire smoke give it character.

Adventure doesn’t care what brand your gear is — only that you showed up.
